As you explore this modality as a possibility, you may have questions:
Do I need a therapist?
Yes, I only work with referrals from therapists. Your therapist must be aware of our work together and you must actively be seeing them throughout our work together
How long does SPT treatment take?
Treatment time depends on each individual and their specific circumstances/goals. The International Professional Surrogates Association suggests that a typical course of treatment lasts from 30-40 hours.
How long are sessions?
Sessions vary depending on the situation. Typically, we meet once a week for 60-75 minutes. Those who are further away may require longer sessions less frequently. I also work in an “intensive” model for those who live in another city.
Do you share information about me with other people?
Through explicit permission given by the client, the therapist, client and surrogate work in a triadic model. This model ensures that the therapist understands what is happening in the sessions in order to fully support the work and the client. I will share relevant information (but not every detail) from our sessions with the therapist, and they will share relevant information with me. It is expected that you will do the same with your therapist- sharing what is relevant from our sessions and processing that together.
Who do you work with?
I work with clients across the gender spectrum and with all sexual orientations and I do not discriminate on the basis of age, race, size or physical ability.
Please note that not all concerns are suitable for SPT. Some diagnoses may not benefit from SPT. Some may be entirely physiological in nature and outside of the scope of this work. It is important for us to evaluate suitability before moving forward.
Are you a therapist?
No, I am not a licensed therapist. I have received over 100 hours of training with the International Professional Surrogates Assocation and am in the internship phase of certification. I meet with a supervisor every week during this phase of my certification process.
